The Person
Originally from Dublin, Ireland now living in Vienna, Darren Gilbert completed Visual Investigation, Drawing and Fine Art Research in NCAD Dublin in 2007. The following year he exhibited work at Investigations Exhibition in Dame Street Gallery.
Currently he has pieces on display around Vienna including The Oak, Rennweg and Charlie P's on Währinger Straße, amongst other places.
Darren also had the privilege of presenting a Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina, with one of his pieces to commemorate their visit to Vienna in 2022.

The Pieces
Varying in styles and mediums, Darren's work can be primarily viewed as a record of his life and the places, people, moments, and concepts, that have left an impression on him.
His work moves between drawing and painting, sometimes bordering the two styles, or contains elements of each.
While most of Darren's recent work is inspired by Vienna, Dublin and his surroundings, they also include elements of social commentary & questions that a modern city and society must ask itself.

The Process
While Darren's earlier work comprises mostly of pastel & oil landscapes of his home town Lucan and places he visited, after completing NCAD courses in Drawing, Visual Investigation and Fine Art Research, his approach to the process and pieces changed.
Rather than just create an individual piece, his work now begins as an inspired journey of visual research of a subject, and experimentation of style, material and mediums to represent it. This culminates in a finished piece or series of pieces, and quite often leads into another concept or project.
